Job Overview: Sojourners is seeking a temporary Associate Multimedia Producer to work with our digital team. The right candidate is a creative of many talents: From writing, producing, editing, and more, they’re not afraid to get their hands dirty in multiple aspects of the creative process. This is a 6-month position based in Washington, D.C., at our office.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Sojourners multimedia team to generate new video, audio, and graphic content, being involved from ideation to completion.
  • Creatively brainstorm new ways to tell stories through digital platforms. From short compelling documentaries, punchy graphic explainers, scripted short films, and other new media, you’ll be at the forefront of producing innovative content for sojo.net.
  • Design graphic media elements such as online ads, website banners, memes, online marketing collateral, etc., as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 1 year experience in multimedia communications.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative products (specifically Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop).
  • Comfortable writing and editing scripts and have a knack for a good interview.
  • Photographic and video proficiency.
  • Ability to learn on the job and turn around projects on a quick timeline to work with the news cycle.
  • Comfortable working in new mediums and formats to reach the widest audiences.
  • Adaptable, self-starter, team player, able to juggle multiple projects at once.
  • A passion for progressive social justice issues with a Christian perspective.

Assistant Editor

Sojourners has an opening for an Assistant Editor to work with the magazine editorial staff in our Washington, D.C. office.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit and proof material for Sojourners magazine (print and online)
  • Develop sidebars, boxes, and other supplementary material for magazine articles
  • Edit and proof materials from other departments
  • Enhance and promote the digital magazine and other magazine content online
  • Coordinate Letters, Short Takes, and in-house ads for the magazine
  • Manage “queries” process for outside article ideas and awards-competition processes
  • Increase our capacity for international coverage
  • Support promotion of magazine via social media and other digital platforms
  • Explore partnerships for possible investigative efforts
  • Help produce and copy edit resources and curriculum material
  • Read and comment on articles in circulation
  • Participate in planning of magazine by attending weekly staff meetings and biannual retreats

Qualifications:

  • Two to four years of editorial experience, preferably in magazine format, including copy writing, editing, and proofreading; proficiency with AP Style.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communications skills; copyediting experience.
  • Experience in nonprofit journalism preferred.
  • Awareness of issues affecting underrepresented communities a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, or communications preferred.
  • Comfortable working independently as well as creatively with the editorial staff.
  • Experience in cross-platform content creation preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing several projects at once.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; proficiency with editing in Drupal 7 and Convio a plus.
  • Experience with social media, video production, and audio editing preferred.
  • Web content management skills a plus.
  • Desire to work on a team of a highly committed Christians who are dedicated to the highest quality advocacy journalism and crafting with excellence the stories of people of faith acting for justice in our world today.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Sojourners' perspective and place in the religious landscape and progressive faith community.
