Sojourners Urges Passage of the Wyden-Smith Child Tax Credit Plan

Washington, D.C.—In response to the introduction of the bipartisan Wyden-Smith tax deal, Sojourners President Rev. Adam Russell Taylor said:

“Sojourners and SojoAction believe that Christians are commanded to care for those in the most vulnerable situations, especially children. We envision a world in which all people have the foundation and stability to support their families, churches, and communities, and live dignified, productive lives. That is why we applaud Senate Finance Chairman Ron Wyden (D-OR) and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO-08) for reaching a bipartisan agreement to expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and call for immediate passage of the bill.

The moral test of any policy decision rests in where and how our government decides to invest, both in the short- and long-term. While the current Child Tax Credit proposal falls short of the full need, we also recognize this important window of opportunity to make meaningful progress towards ending child poverty. This is good news as at a time when the rate of child poverty more than doubled in 2022 and continues to grow and families struggle to afford the things needed to ensure their children survive.

We support pro-family, pro-common good policies and programs that eradicate the evil of poverty and protect human dignity, help families thrive, and promote space for kids to grow and learn. Sojourners and SojoAction urge Congress to act justly and show mercy by passing the Wyden-Smith Child Tax Credit plan immediately. We know that poverty is a policy choice and so we pray that Congress continues to be motivated into making good choices that protect human dignity, help families thrive, and promote space for kids to grow and learn.”
