WASHINGTON, DC - On April 3—Good Friday—a coalition of faith leaders, recognizing the dire urgency of recent events and the ongoing crisis around racial justice, sent a letter to President Biden urging him to use the power of the executive order to establish a Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Commission (TRHT) in the United States.

In the letter, faith leaders call for a commission that properly acknowledges and memorializes the truth of our history, and acts as a catalyst for progress toward discarding the historic founding belief of this nation in a hierarchy of human value based on race—which some have called America’s original sin. The coalition commits to supporting the TRHT commission which would help our nation to embrace not only our common history but our common humanity and common commitment to permanently eliminate systemic racial inequities in our nation.

Fundamentally, a TRHT commission undergirds a core belief of the Christian faith in the inherent dignity, value, and worth of all humans equally created in the image of God. Faith leadership from and aligned with the communities directly impacted by systematic oppression are ready to help steward healing and are awaiting bold action from the administration.
