The Director of Congregational Education and Outreach provides leadership over the organization’s engagement with varied congregants and faith leaders with a special emphasis on efforts to address political and/or cultural polarization within congregations and their communities. In this role the director serves as the chief lead on Sojourners Congregations from Polarization to Unity (CPU) project, plays an integral role in building and strengthening relationships across churches, and provides other external and representational engagement on behalf of the organization. Sojourners is open to fully remote candidates for this position with two annual trips to Washington, D.C., required.

Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate and build relationships with faith leaders, churches, and congregants across the country. Sojourners is an ecumenical organization and is committed to serving the wide array of congregations and denominations present in the U.S. church.
  • Lead the development, execution, promotion, and evaluation of Sojourners’ Congregations from Polarization to Unity (CPU) project, including but not limited to:
    • Identify and convene virtual focus groups of congregants and faith leaders to help inform program development.
    • Develop content and curriculum materials for a virtual Learning Hub that incorporates best practices for digital education. This includes managing the software delivery system and the production of interactive materials.
    • Develop and staff community of support for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) faith leaders which incorporates renewal and spiritual care.
    • Identify and cultivate congregants and faith leaders to engage in the virtual learning community to share knowledge and experience utilizing the CPU and other resources.
    • Lead CPU evaluation activities. Design assessment tools to determine the effectiveness of the CPU resources and learning group.
    • In collaboration with the Sojourners’ Mobilizing and Marketing Teams, supervise the communications and outreach plan, including speaking opportunities to engage congregants and faith leaders.
    • Monitor program budget and spending.
    • Monitor program benchmarks and outcomes to adjust strategies, as needed.
    • oReport program updates and progress to Sojourners Board of Directors, funders, and other key stakeholders.
  • Supervise the Manager of Congregational Education and Outreach.
  • Represent Sojourners and the CPU project at faith-based conferences, churches, and other venues.
  • Promote effective and clear internal communication in collaboration with Sojourners mobilizing and cross-organization teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  •  Master’s degree in education, communications, or related field.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in education administration, digital learning, and/or program development and administration. Experience working with church networks or denominations is a plus.
  • Ability to create multifaceted set of educational programs from the ground-up.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; high level of diplomacy and tact.
  • Strong ability to interact with the public and high-level individuals and work collaboratively with diverse constituencies.
  • Proven organizational skills, with strong ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects, work independently, and demonstrate initiative.
  • Highly organized and accurate, with attention to detail.
  • Experience working with BIPOC leaders and developing resources to support their unique needs.
  • Preference for experience in digital learning/digital community management.
  • Experience and/or background in democracy building, polarization, or conflict resolution is a plus.

The role:

Sojourners is seeking a Multimedia Graphic Designer. The Multimedia Graphic Designer is essential to evolving the Sojourners brand and visual storytelling through graphic design, vertical video, and motion graphics. They will utilize their skills to tell stories at the intersection of faith and social justice to reach Sojourners’ audience of 3 million. Sojourners is open to fully remote candidates with two annual trips to Washington, D.C., required.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Create a variety of digital and print materials, including in-house ads, promotional and fundraising materials, editorial illustrations, online article images, social media assets, and formatted resources.
  • Create vertical videos to promote Sojourners’ editorial content on social media
  • Become an expert on Sojourners’ brand guide, immersing yourself in our visual system and building on it. In coordination with the art director, you will help refine the Sojourners visual brand across our website, magazine, advocacy work, and more.
  • Work closely with the marketing team on overall brand management.
  • Work collaboratively across the organization to assess project needs and deliver assets. Schedule and manage design meetings as needed to identify design requirements and timelines for various projects.

Experience and Skills:

  • This is a mid-level position.
  • Experience with evolving an established brand identity system.
  • Portfolio showcasing a variety of design work across print and digital media.
  • Experience and passion to connect Gen-Z and other audiences to Sojourners’ faith-based content through dynamic video and visual content.

Sojourners is a 52-year-old Christian ecumenical organization. Through our publications, mobilizing, and advocacy, Sojourners articulates the biblical call to social justice. We have resourced and equipped millions of people from around the world to put their faith into action for social justice.

The Donor Services and Database Manager is a key member of the Advancement team. They have primary responsibility for managing Sojourners’ donor database (Raiser’s Edge), ensuring accurate entry of gifts into Raiser’s Edge, coordinating acknowledgement letters, and maintaining and reporting data. This position collaborates with the Director of Donor Services on the development and implementation of donor services strategies and database best practices; and provides departmental support for prospect research, state registration renewals, and special projects. This position will also steward a small portfolio of mid-level donors. This role reports to the Director of Donor Services and will supervise the Donor Services Assistant beginning in August 2024.

Sojourners is a hybrid work environment. The Donor Services and Database Manager is expected to work from Sojourners’ Washington, D.C. office two days per week

Responsibilities

Operations and Data Management, Analysis, and Reporting:

  • Serve as the Advancement Department’s database administrator; manage the department’s database needs, including communication with tech support staff, and support Director of Donor Services with database optimization projects.
  • Ensure accurate data entry of donations received via mail, online, and other sources.
  • Process donations and constituent information daily in Raiser’s Edge through the import/export plug-in, and serve as liaison with our plug-in provider.
  • Manage weekly and monthly uploads of gift data from external sources into Raiser’s Edge.
  • Merge duplicates in Raiser’s Edge on an annual basis.
  • Coordinate the communication of all acknowledgments to donors, including preparing and sending monthly gift files for outsourced mailings and preparing letters as needed.
  • Support the Chief Advancement Officer and Director of Strategic Gifts by conducting and optimizing prospect research.
  • Work with vendor to manage Sojourners’ bi-annual state registration renewal applications for charitable organization status.
  • Manage workplace giving program through HCROA annual application process and the Combined Federal Campaign.
  • Provide special project support for the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director of Foundation Relations, and Director of Strategic Gifts as appropriate at supervisor’s request
  • With Chief Advancement Officer’s guidance, prepare departmental meeting agendas and facilitate weekly meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Donor Stewardship:

  • Actively steward and manage a portfolio of 25-30 mid-level donors.

Supervision:

  • In the future, supervise the Donor Services Assistant and their work to steward Sustainer’s Circle members and communicate effectively with donors.
  • In the future, support the Donor Services Assistant in achieving their goals through collaboration, mentorship, and professional development.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • The ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience working with querying, exporting, and manipulating large data sets in Raiser’s Edge.
  • 2 + years of development experience in a nonprofit setting strongly preferred.
