UCC Passes Emergency Resolution Denouncing Trump’s Stance on Climate Change

On June 3, the United Church of Christ passed a resolution on climate change in which they criticized President Trump’s decision to pull the United States out of the Paris climate accord agreement, reports the Boston Globe.

In approving the resolution, titled “The Earth Is the Lord’s, Not Ours to Wreck,” the United Church of Christ may have become the first U.S. Christian denomination to officially stand against President Trump’s decision. The resolution asks for people of faith to also take a stand.

“Now is the time for congregants and for every person of faith to set a moral example through our own words and actions,” the resolution reads.

The resolution continues:

“As individuals and as communities, let us commit to making decisions of integrity in our energy choices, undoing the disproportionate impact of climate change on communities of color, indigenous communities, and poor white communities around the world, even as we commit to hold all religions, political, corporate, and global leaders accountable to do the same.”

According to the Boston Globe, a United Church of Christ poll conducted earlier this year revealed that most of the denomination’s members consider climate change the largest hurdle in the church’s future. Leaders of the United Church of Christ hope their July 3 resolution will inspire other religious organizations to respond to President Trump's policies.
